Samkvæmt rannsókn á vegum Edinborgarháskóla og ráðgjafarfyrirtækisins Pareto Consulting eru jákvæð efnahagsleg áhrif sjókvíaeldis við Skotlandsstrendur stórlega ofmeti. Arður rennur í vasa stórfyrirtækja og auðmanna í öðrum heimshlutum en kostnaðurinn situr allur eftir.
Við þurfum ekki að efast um að svipað gildir hér á Íslandi.
EW REPORT: Scottish salmon farming isn’t paying its way.
A groundbreaking independent study by Pareto Consulting and the University of Edinburgh Business School finds the net value of Scotland’s salmon farming industry is being routinely exaggerated.Commissioned by WildFish and @sift.scot , the report reveals:
- Up to a quarter of salmon farming jobs may be offset by other job losses
- Tax breaks and subsidies mask the true economic contribution
- Multinational companies profit while Scottish communities pay the price
- Creel fishers, shellfish growers, and marine tourism are impacted by expansion of salmon farms
- Profits leak overseas, reducing benefits to Scotland’s rural economy
Despite repeated claims of success, salmon farming is costing other sectors jobs and damaging our wild fish populations and coastal ecosystems.
We’re calling for urgent scrutiny of its national economic impact before any further expansion is approved.
